A Little Opinion Polling
Just curious what you fiber fans think about this... My inlaws are coming in to town tonight. We see them about twice a year for a weekend. (They stay at a hotel, thank goodness.) Anyway, we always end up just sitting around "catching up."
Here's my question. Would it be totally rude to be knitting while we are sitting around? What if I'm doing stockinette in the round, with no charts? Or socks? Because, you know, it won't be Socktober forever.
Thoughts, comments, reactions?

I still vote not rude...as long as you aren't squinting at a chart the whole time...can you knit and still make eye contact?
Besides, it will give you something to talk about.
If you can do it without looking at the knitting, I'd say go for it.
God, Laura, KNIT. I remember having inlaws, .....knit. At least you will have something by which to remember the evening.......:)
I say go ahead and knit. I knit all day today at my DH's family reunion and didn't feel guilty at all about it. If it helps, you could always say, "since we're family, I thought I'd just do what I always do and knit while we visit..." or something to that affect.
Great advice everyone! Although asking you guys about whether I should knit might be a little like asking a car salesman if I need a new car. LOL!
They were here for just a couple hours tonight, so I didn't knit. But tomorrow I foresee an extended visit. I am totally pulling out the needles.
I once finished seaming a sweater while chatting with my boyfriend and his parents while they were visiting. I actually jumped up and went upstairs to put the sweater on and see it in the mirror, pretty much mid-conversation. They didn't mind one bit :)
Go for it! I've only ever had one person complain because I was knitting while we were in the midst of another activity... but he's a controlling freak so I don't count his reaction as 'normal.' Anyway, totally go for it - people are always so impressed to see someone knitting.
Knit, of course. I just tell people that I like to keep my hands busy. Sitting and chatting is about the only time I spend actually Just Sitting, so it's perfect for knitting. Go for it. It will help you relax.
Totally kosher, so long as when they ask you a question, you don't give them the Glare of Death and mutter, "I'm COUNTING. Ssssssssshhhhhhhhhhh!" Because that might be construed as a teensy bit rude. As long as you can avoid that sort of thing, you should be good to go.
I knit around my in-laws all the time (of course, they see us all the time, so it's sort of a different case...). I figure I'm not being rude if it's casual conversation that doesn't require my full attention. As in, I can throw in comments every once in awhile, but I'm not expected to hang on (or hear) every word. For example, I wouldn't take my knitting to my book group but I knit all the time during mellow get-togethers.
i think if you can do both at the same time... go for it!!!!
