One Little Sock
Pathetically, this is all I have managed to finish lately. Starting things, that I am really good at. Finishing, not so much. These are socks for my niece, who was recently visiting from California with her twin sister, little brother, and Mom and Dad. (Her mom is my little sister.) Olga recently posted about the joys of the auntie gig. It's a nice job if you can get it; I only wish I got to enjoy it more!Anyhow, Niecie M saw me pull out this yarn one afternoon when I was visiting with them at my mom's and was instantly entranced. She wanted socks from this yarn (Cider Moon Glacier in the highly girly Go-Go colorway). How could I refuse? Now I just need to make three more. Because I certainly can't make a pair for M and not her sweet sister T.
And here's a picture of the beautiful coasters I got from Ashley. I realized the other day that one reason I love them so much is that they remind me of the cover of one of my favoritest albums.It's been so disgustingly hot here that I haven't touched my sewing machine in weeks, which makes me very sad. (My craft room is on the third floor of my old, un-air-conditioned house.) I've got my fingers crossed for a cold snap, along with some free time.

The other day, Amy Karol of Angry Chicken wrote a very interesting post about reducing the presence of plastics in her home. I have made a little goal for myself of bringing no more plastic shopping bags into my house. I have several reusable bags from the grocery store, which I keep in the car. I usually carry a large bag, so small things can go into that. And, of course, I wouldn't be sorry to have an excuse to sew a bunch of cute totes as well. I'd like to be able to get rid of all my plastic dishes for the kids, but S recently has gone through a "breaking dishes and glasses when frustrated" stage (love you, autism!). I think he's about over it, but I'm not inclined to test it.
I recently saw this New York Times article about the environmental impact of buying bottled water and wanted to bring it to your attention. In general, bottled water is no healthier than tap water, is ridiculously more expensive, and results in millions of plastic bottles in landfills which take literally centuries to decompose. Having learned this, I've decided not to buy bottled water any more. Just a little food (or drink) for thought.

Love that album! I wanted to say hi, I've been reading for a little while but I just started working at Knitting on the Square with Kate and she mentioned that you sometimes shop there. Made me want to delurk! Maybe I'll see you in the shop sometime!

What a sweet little sock! It reminds me of tulips, for some reason.
I'm also trying to limit harsh chemicals in our house, but plastics seem much harder to get rid of for some reason!

That New York Times article was great -- I was really pleased to see it stay on top of the "most emailed" list for several days, which to me means it's getting lots of attention and probably having a bit of an impact. We have recommitted ourselves to avoiding bottled water as much as possible as a result.
Oh, by the way, I meant to say that the sock is super cute, too!

I've been working on the plastic bag thing too--I picked up a couple of hemp totes that my grocery store was selling, and I also just bought a chunk of upholstery fabric from the remnants section at the fabric store to make some good sturdy bags with. Bye-bye, plastic!

I'm not hopping on the anti-plastic bag bandwagon anytime soon. I personally love getting plastic bags from the grocery store and Target. I reuse them all for scooping the litter box. My best friend and my mother-in-law even give me some of their bags!
That is such a cute sock! And thanks for the continued inspiration for rejecting bottled water. I guess I'm lucky that I think it tastes funny anyway. :)
My husband has always claimed that bottled water is one of the great hoaxes perpetrated on our nation, and I tend to agree. What a huge waste of natural resources it is to transport it around the globe...

I've been seeing a lot about the impact of plastic bags and bottles of water recently, too. Fortunately I use my Nalgene bottle and canvas bags most of the time, but I want to be more aware of what I'm using, too.
Lovely sock. The yarn looks so soft and inviting...
And for the record, I've always preferred the taste of tap water. Never knew I was being environmentally aware, but I'll take it :)
We just swore off bottled water a few weeks ago, too. I was all excited to get some pretty, colorful Nalgene bottles until Brian found out that polycarbonate was one of the "bad" plastics. *sigh* So now I guess we need to head back to REI or New Seasons for the stainless ones.
And lordy knows I have enough old book bags and totes around here to use for groceries--I just need to do it! :)

That yarn is super squishy - makes me just want to hug it! And I'm with you on the bottled water. Love the Nalgene bottle.
It really is a beautiful sock. And as for not getting stuff finished in a timely manner, you really don't want to know when one of my bigger afghans was due to its recipient, lol.

What pattern do you use for kids socks? I'm thinking of knitting some knee socks for my daughter.
Up here (Canada) one of the grocery chains has reusable bags made out of recycled plastic bags, very cool. I wish I could swear off bottled water but I live in a oil field and the water is not normal. I love the sock of course.

Reducing plastics is a great idea. I've also noticed the amount of plastics and glass since I started making my own iced tea and not buying or drinking soda.
